A Tough Decision

2008-09-15

I`m checking out the nominees for the worst advertisements in Latvian mass media of 2008 and so far it`s been very tough deciding.
For instance, when we take a look at the nominees for the worst TV ad, every contestant has its truly magnificent ugliness.
Brex Chips have a disgusting slogan: "Brex is better than sex"
The Maxima ad "we do not wash old salad and sell it as new salad" had the worst outcome as virtually everyone after this campaign was speaking about how Maxima washes old salad (and I`m pretty sure that it also brought a decline in sales)
The "Vanish" ad in the airport is SO EIGHTIES that you can`t stop from laughing during this ad. And you are not laughing WITH the people who made it but AT them.
The second airport ad in the category - "Urinal" - has two great capacities - it is both disgusting because of its subject and idiotic because of its content, a truly powerful combination.
Finally the "Chicko Chicken" ad - I`m tired of all this unhealthy junk food, I`m eating Chicko Chicken now uses probably the most bizarre logics I`ve ever encountered, and it is done in such a stupidly amateur manner that it will probably get my vote in the category.
In the category "worst ad in the press" my vote certainly goes to the alcoholics of "Līvu akvaparks" (although the slutty "Dienas kūrorts spa" ad is no slouch either.
When looking at the "Environmental advertisement contenders, I must pay my dues to the "Brex - sex" ad. In the TV category the competition is too strong for it, but here - it simply blows your head off.
In the worst logo nomination I will choose the brilliant English translation of "Language in jelly", although I also enjoyed the "Lords un Lēdija" logo.
Finally we come to the worst internet ad nomination. Here I don`t see a clear favourite. ARTEM has a uniquely ru-tvian text but I`ll probably chose the "without my TV I`m nothing" banner. Being a strong television opposer I have no other option.
Anyway - this contest has once again given me proof that Latvian advertisement market still rocks.
