It's a nice day for a white wedding

2008-08-08

That`s the way the Billy Idol song goes, and so apparently has decided the vast majority of Latvian young couples that 08-08-08 is the perfect day for their weddings. At least when I cycled through the city centre a couple of hours ago, there wasn`t a direction where you could spit and not hit a bride in a white dress. In the Bastejs park there were queues of newly-weds on every bridge.

I wonder if it really is the best strategy to get married on a day when everybody gets married. Don`t people want their wedding day to be somewhat special? Or do they really have some comfort in knowing that they got married on the same day as Syd and Nancy, Bill and Monica, John and Yoko, Bonnie and Clyde and hundreds of other their friends and relatives? Please note that by the names in the previous sentence I don`t state that, for example, John Lennon and Yoko Ono got married on 08-08-08, I just use well-known names for couples.
