It had been a hot and sunny day, therefore just 1 hardy fan made it out to Latvenergo sporta zāle for a friendly match of volleyball between SSE Riga and RGSL.
A girl was the appointed referee with assistance provided by a smartphone application to record the score. Everyone was excited about the upcoming Riga derby and the crowd was mostly cheering for SSE. I have no idea about strategic formations in volleyball. In the first set SSE played with the following roster: two guys in blue shirts, one guy in a green shirt, another guy in a white shirt, one girl in green shirt and another girl in a blue shirt. RGSL chose a formation with one guy in a yellow shirt, two guys in blue shirts, one guy in a red shirt, one girl in a black shirt and one girl in a shirt in the color of the Latvian flag. Actually one of the RGSL guys in blue shirts had been borrowed from the SSE team, as RGSL were a player short.
The score changed too fast for me to be able to come up with a believable chronology of the match. Early on in the first set SSE took a determined lead, but RGSL were able to counter it and until something like 7 or 8 points the play was pretty much even. But later on the SSE team began to dominate, with the guy in white being probably the decisive factor in their supremacy. It did not take a professionally trained eye to determine that some of the players on the SSE squad were more skilled than the rest of the participants of this game. The first set ended with a dominant victory of SSE with 25 to 14.
The second set was a better balanced affair, after some lineup changes in the SSE team, however again they came out victorious in the set. After some discussions it was decided that a third set would be played, with SSE switching to a three boys - three girls squad, thus leading to a very even set, thus entertaining the crowd better. I think that it was RGSL that won this set, but I wouldn&39;t bet my life on it, the score was probably 25 to 23.
SSE&39;s best player was the guy in a white shirt. The guy in a yellow shirt performed admirably for RGSL.
