Salman Rushdie

Grimus

6.5
"Grimus" ir pirmais Salmana Rušdī romāns, bet tajā var saskatīt ļoti daudz ko no tā, kas vēlāk padarīja šo autoru pasaulslavenu. Tā es droši vien būtu sācis šo aprakstu, ja man nebūtu īsti skaidrs, ko par šo grāmatu rakstīt. Un tā arī apmēram ir.

The Satanic Verses

8.5
It took me some time to get a hold of this book. You see, it never got published in Latvian and it can not be bought in Russian. As far as I`ve understood it`s banned or something like that. Weird things happen in the world. It`s not that scandalous - just a very good book. Anyhow there are three parallel stories taking place on the pages of this book. Or are there just two of them? Or is it four? I`m not so sure. The central line tells us about Saladin Chamcha and Gibreel Farishta - two Indian actors who survive a air-plane explosion and after that they somehow turn into respectively Satan and arch-angel Gabriel (Shaitan and Gibreel for the muslims). But the angel isn`t that good and satan that bad. Probably what bugged the muslims the most is another part of the story which tells us about Mahound (Mohammed) and his revelations from Gibreel (this story comes to Farishta in his sleep). It`s actually a bit similar with what Bulgakov wrote about Jesus. And the third story line is about Ayesha - a young woman that leads her whole village to Mecca on a pilgrimage. What`s weird is the outcome - you can`t really say, whether the ending was or wasn`t a lucky one for the pilgrims. This was certainly not an easy reading task by any means - Rushdie`s writing style, his choice of words, his structure of sentences aren`t easy to handle for a person like me that`s not too strong in English, but it was most certainly worth it. It was worth the time, the effort, for "Everything will be asked from us and everything will be given."

Haroun and the Sea of Stories

8.0

Fury

6.5
Once you receive a death sentence you start to look at things in a different way. Or you don`t. Not that it really matters. What is characteristic to any book of Rushdie`s is the complexity of his language and the low "readability" level. That`s just the case with "Fury", one of his most recent books. Malik Solanka is a Indo-British professor who leaves his wife and child and flees to the States for he doesn`t know how to cope with his fury and anger. Apart from being a professor he`s a dollmaker, and a bit crazy for that, as a matter of fact. Most of the time he either makes his weird dolls for a new project of his or makes love to some woman about half his age. Yeah, if you want to know there`s a lot of Rushdie`s biography in Solanka. But I really don`t wanna know whether Solanka had to performs blow-jobs on his step-dad or not. Rushdie certainly tries to be accessible and modern, the book includes numerous references to popular music, computer games, Hollywood films (especially "Star wars") etc., etc. But he doesn`t convince me that he really lives for that. And midlife sexuality isn`t particulary sexual for my taste. Still the book has its positive values in terms of fury and Furies Mr. Rushdie knows his stuff.

The Enchantress of Florence

7.5
