Jean-Luc Godard once again. This time it`s a crime movie about a man who kills a cop and wants to flee with his girlfriend from Parice to Rome. Most of the time he does very little for succeeding in his task though. The girl is a young American who works selling `New York Harald Tribune` on the streets of Paris and doesn`t really know if she loves Michael. Neither does she know who her boyfriend really is. Not that she cares when she finds out. The film may seem a bit odd and it`s just what it should be like. At least it`s much more entertaining than `My life to live` and a bit tighter structured. Although I don`t know yet why Godard is so obsessed with that Tribune newspaper which seems to appearing in most films of his. Yeah, Jean Paul Belmondo is the star of the film though I must admit that I don`t really like his fat lips. I know that it`s good for an Italian mafia person but does this look unpretty indeed.

What is wrong with me - it`s the second film about a woman becoming a prostitute in something like 30 last hours. Not that it was an intention of mine, but here go the facts. And it`s the second black-and-white film about prostitues. And the leading woman is pretty again. And it`s a French film again. Only this time she (called Nana) doesn`t end up like this just because of fun. It`s for the money. And it`s not as surreal as a film by Bunuel. Jean-Luc Godard is the director of this one. It`s organised in chapters some of which are very short while other last some time. No explicit scenes around, but it doesn`t make the film easier. To be honest, it doesn`t make the film better or worse. Not a great sensation for me. Well, one part is stands out - it`s when all the basic facts about prostitution are given - what the prices are, what do the laws say, etc. Anna Karina plays Nana (not that I have seen some other films with her but I might see some soon - after all I`m a bit into French movies). First she works at a record store and wants to become a professional actress but it doesn`t work out well for her and she starts living from her body. A pimp named Raoul takes her under his protection, but when he sells her to some other people Nana gets killed.

Žans-Luks Godārs joprojām nav kļuvis par manu iecienītāko franču režisoru, bet ja jau es skatos visas filmas, ko šī valsts virzījusi Oskaram, būtu diezgan nesmuki no manas puses ņemt un ignorēt Godāru. Ja kas - ir viena lieta, kas man patīk, skatoties 50.-60.gadu franču filmas - tajās vienmēr bez izņēmumiem kādā no lomām ir redzams kāds aktieris no tā laika superzvaigžņu kategorijas. Tā šajā filmā galveno lomu atveido neviens cits kā leģendām apvītais Žans-Pols Belmondo, bet viņa partnere šajā filmā ir ilggadīgā Godāra mūza Anna Karina.

Lasīju Haruki Murakami romānu "After Dark", kurā bija pieminēta šī Godāra filma. Izdomāju - ja jau Murakami to slavē, arī man nenāks par ļaunu to noskatīties. Nekas, ka Godārs man parasti negaršo, varbūt šoreiz būs savādāk.

Jāatzīst, ka Žans Luks Godārs ir viens no tiem režisoriem, kurus man pagaidām atkost nav izdevies. Pirms vairākiem gadiem noskatījos divas šī franču jaunā viļņa klasiķa filmas, bet neviena no tām mani sevišķi nepiesaistīja. Tagad, kad esmu vecāks, resnāks un nesmukāks, izlēmu atgriezties pie mēģinājumiem izprast Godāra patieso dabu. Un atkal jau ne pārāk veiksmīgi, lai gan šoreiz pie vainas varētu būt nepareizi izvēlēta filma - kā nekā Godāra labāki gadi tomēr ir visai tālā pagātnē, un viņa jaunākās filmas līdz ar to sevišķi augstu nekotējas.
