(valoda: vācu). Jā, es patiešām lasīju vāciski amerikāņu rakstnieka romānu. Kālab tā darīju? Tādēļ, ka iekš Dukahome tādu atradu. Iepriekšējais Steinbeka darbs, ko lasīju pirms kāda gada, uz mani nekādu īpaši labu iespaidu atstājis nebija, bet tas taču nenozīmē, ka arī citas viņa grāmatas nav labas. "Tortilla Flat" stāsta par dīkdieņu grupiņu ASV Lielās depresijas laikā. Grupiņas nosacītais līderis ir Danijs, kurš negaidīti mantojis divas sīkas mājeles ciematā un no mežā guļoša dīkdieņa ir kļuvis par bez maz vai bieziķi. Protams, tas neliedz viņam turpināt pārtikt no zagtām olām un kaut kur samangota vīna. Sanāk tā, ka viena no viņa mājām nodeg un pamazām atlikušajā ievācas vesels bariņš ar viņa čomakiem, šādējādi (atbilstoši autora iecerei) veidojot mazliet farsisku versiju par Apaļā galda bruņiniekiem (ar kuriem vairākas reizes šamie tiek salīdzināti), kas mitinās kopā Kamelotā. Īsti atšķirt personāžus vienu no otra man tā arī neizdevās, jo viņu raksturi ir diezgan līdzīgi. Vienīgais īpatnis viņu vidū ir Pirāts - garīgi mazliet atpalicis tips, kas gadiem ilgi krāj naudu, lai varētu nopirkt baznīcā uzstādāmu lukturi kā veltījumu svētajam Franciskam, kas reiz paglābis no slimības vienu no Pirāta suņiem (suņu viņam ir diezgan daudz un pirms pārvākšanās pie Danija viņš ar saviem pieciem suņiem gulēja vistu kūtī) - tiesa, visai drīz pēc brīnumainās izglābšanas to suni notrieca smagā mašīna, bet par to Pirāts neaizdomājas. Principā grāmata ir nebeidzams apraksts par to, kā mantas tiek iemainītas tirgotavā pret vīnu un kā tās mantas tiek pēcāk no tirgotavas nozagtas un kā kāds no varoņiem paved kādu no ne īpaši saistošajām ciema sievietēm. Tāds sex and booze stāsts, tā varētu teikt. Brīžiem pat diezgan smieklīgi, lai gan lielākoties - ne visai. Tomēr labāk nekā tā otra grāmata, kuras nosaukumu esmu aizmirsis.

One of the classics in the literature for children that I had not read before. This time it was `Neco z Alenky` that made me eventually to read this little book here. Not that I liked it. As for literature for children `Alice` makes not very much sense at all - a few moments are good but that`s basically it. Even the partly absurd `Neco z Alenky` had better developed characters than the original book. Wordplay is good but the story goes pretty much nowhere. The rating is not lower only because I don`t have very high standarts in this category.

Another one of the classics that I thought to need to catch up with. And this one was no disappointment. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are great as Martha and George - the crazy couple that lives somewhere between reality and fantasies. Only four actors, almost no change of decorations, and still a great movie. Characters don`t act the way one would expect them to, but are we really that predictable and do rules of logic apply to everyday life? I don`t suppose they do.

Those pesky Japanese know how to make a good horror film. And here we get a chance to see one. Although the plot isn`t particulary good. I`m not even sure that there is one. There`s a haunted house where a man killed his wife, his child and his cat. Later on everyone who went into this house died. There`s no reason why that happened, and not even a real mistery, but the images are scary in the typical Japanese way. There`s a strange child that sometimes looks pale and sometimes doesn`t but all the time looks disturbed and scary. There are strange noises, people die then and now. You can`t feel safe anywhere, because creeping females can catch you everythere. A social worker, a retired policeman, his daughter, her friends,an active policeman are among the people that die because of the grudge. Probably, if you watch the film more than once you will be able to find out what the plot was all about, but the bare thought of doing that alone in my room gives me the shivers. Of course, this ain`t no "Ringu" but this most certainly is a decent horror film that will disturb your sleep if it wants to.

Why are 3D animated, computer generated cartoons better than the ones that are drawn by hand? Is computer already better than an artist? Of course, not. But artists working for 3D cartoons receive more money, and that makes the difference. The Incredibles, for instance, despite being a cartoon about superheroes somehow manages to leave the impression of being quite fresh. First, we get a bit of reality when superheroes need to turn down their actions because they always get into trouble with lawyers. Then we join the life of a perfectly normal superhero family which has an incredibly strong dad, a very flexible mom, a dissapearing daughter and a ultra-fast son. By the way, just like it usually happens - the daughter is older than the son. What`s this supposed to mean? After being fired from his non-super job Mr. Incredible starts working for a stranger, which just happens to be the supervillain planning to take over the world. It sounds silly, doesn`t it? And it partly is, and partly isn`t. First, there`s perfect computer graphics. Then there`s enough of humour. And then - although the characters aren`t particulary deep they are easy to accept as what they are. If you`re not for something particulary "mind shaking" The Incredibles is quite a good choice for you.

This is the second part of T.Mann`s tertalogy about Joseph from the Bible who`s known to most people in connection with his brothers. I`m not sure why I took the second part of the novel from my library. Not that this would be the kind of book where you absolutely must read from the first page til the end - the story isn`t exactly new and unexpected twists aren`t a thing to look for in a book like this one. So this part tells us about Joseph`s youth (as the title clearly suggests) - when he`s in his teenage years, starts having his stupid non-sexual dreams, pisses his brothers off, is thrown by his brothers in a hole, rescued by some travellers and close to being sold into slavery into Egypt. I`d rather not talk about the story but what I thought of Joseph. To me he is an annoying brat, completely deserving the attitude his brothers have towards him. He just thinks that he`s sooo clever, sooo good looking and so much better than everybody else that he needs to wake up and smell the coffee. And the best thing to do that is being thrown in a hole in the ground with a nice perspective of dying there. Now let`s hear what I have to say about the book. First it was quite hard to get into it - T.Mann is a bit a heavy writer, relying quite massively on the German tradition of writing every detail you`ll never need in your life and doing to in quite a boring manner. Later on I found out that it`s quite a rewarding read, yet mainly for my German and not for my soul. It`s good, it`s well-written but it`s not my kind of literature. I may be happy having read at least one of Mann`s works but I`m not planning reading any other part of "Joseph and his brothers" right now.

"Prestižs" ir tikai viena no trim pēdējā laikā noskatītajām filmām, kurās piedalās burvju mākslinieki. Patiesībā visām šīm filmām ir šis tas kopīgs. Pirmkārt, divās no tām piedalās Skārleta Johansena. Otrkārt, visās šajās filmās burvju mākslinieki izmanto pazušanas triku. Treškārt, arī Hjū Džekmens piedalās divās no šīm filmām. Tagad tikai jautājums - kas ir trešā filma? "Iluzionists" un "Prestižs" - tas tā kā būtu skaidrs. Bet trešā filma, protams, ir Vudija Alena "Scoop" - kurā mēs arī redzējām Džekmena saspēli ar Johansenu. Tomēr šī filma nebūt nav komēdija, bet gan drāma mūža garumā starp diviem burvju māksliniekiem, kuru galvenais mērķis dzīvē ir pārspēt savu konkurentu. Konflikts sākas pēc tam, kad, iespējams, Kristiana Beila varoņa (Alfreda Bordena) vainas dēļ bojā iet Džekmena varoņa (Roberta Endžiera) iemīļotā sieviete - trika ar izbēgšanu no stikla kastes laikā. Nez kāpēc Endžiers apvainojas, un tad sākas nebeidzamas savstarpējas kaitniecības, kas viņiem abiem diezgan pamatīgi sagandē veselību. Tomēr vislielākais šoks Endžieram rodas, kad Bordenam parādās jauns triks - kaut kas līdzīgs teleportācijai. Endžiera "skolotājs" gan apgalvo, ka tur patiesībā nav nekā vairāk par dubliera izmantošanu, bet Endžiers netic, ka triks varētu būt tik vienkāršs. Tiesa, viņš pats, lai triku atkārtotu, izmanto dublieri, taču tas ilgstoši nav izmantojams, jo dublierim ir liela nosliece uz alkoholismu. Tikmēr Skārleta Johansena vispirms ir asistente un mīļākā vienam no viņiem, bet pēc tam otram. Vispār filma ir ļoti pat samudžināta, turklāt tajā vēl parādās Deivids Bovijs Nikola Teslas lomā (filmā parādās arī klonēšana - tādējādi padarot to mazāk reālistisku), skatīties ļoti interesanti, lai gan, protams, saprast to, ka arī otram no viņiem ir dubultnieks, var diezgan ātri, bet tas laikam gan nav filmas mērķis saglabāt intrigu iespējami ilgi. Filma noteikti ne sliktāka par "The Illusionist".

"Venēra", kā jau to var nojaust, ir kārtējā no Oskariem izvirzītajām filmām, šoreiz - lirisks stāsts par dīvainām attiecībām starp vecu veci un jaunu sievieti. Moriss un Ījans ir divi pensionēti angļi, kas mitinās kaut kur Londonā un kuru dzīves pamazām tuvojas finišam. Taču tajās notiek negaidīts pavērsiens, kad pie Ījana apmetas uz dzīvi viņa māsasmeita (laikam) Džesija. Ījanam, kurš patiesībā ir diezgan nīgrs tips, ar savu jauno radinieci attiecības veidojas izteikti negatīvas un viņš draugu palūdz šamo nedaudz pieskatīt. Tā pieskatīšana gan sanāk tāda diezgan savdabīga - noteikti ne tāda, kā tu domā, lasot šo frāzi, bet tāda, ka es pat īsti nevaru pateikt kāda - nu tāda dīvaina. Pati filma arī ir tāda pati - ļoti savdabīga. Es, protams, cietu no tā, ka to skatījos krieviskā (visnotaļ zemas kvalitātes) tulkojumā, kas angļu filmās man īpaši krīt uz nerviem, bet situācija bija tāda, ka citu variantu man vienkārši nebija un nācās samierināties ar izveidojušos situāciju. Žēl, bet Oskaru veterāns Pīters O`Tūls par šo filmu noteikti nedabūs - manās acīs viņa iespējas tikt pie šīs balvas nav lielākas kā Goslingam par "Half Nelson" (šādējādi dalot ceturto-piekto vietu). Bet filma laba, lai gan ne gluži Vislabākā.

Nicole Kidman has sold her soul to the devil of mass consuption! Either this or she`s out of her mind. How otherwise could you explain the reasons an actress of her name and calibre would agree to do a film like this one? On paper it whole looks good - a popular actor who`s career has been on the decline recently hires a simple girl from the street to do the leading role of a witch in the remake of a sitcom "Bewitched". But little does he know that the girl (Kidman) is a witch herself. And little do I know that Kidman, supposedly a young and naive girl is in her mid thirties! Not quite type for a young naive girl. It was different on that real sitcom about the teenage witch Sabrina. Ok, in this film we at least get to see a living cat instead of a talking taxidermists patient. But we also get to see a romantic comedy with a script that was probably written by a single monkey in a limited amount of time, for otherwise the complete works of Shakespeare might have been the result. Jokes are silly, tricks are silly, dialogues are stupid, all supporting actors should receive a death penalty and Nicole Kidman should sign a paper prohibiting herself from ever seing anyone involved in this film again and prohibiting her doing films that I would dislike after the first 10 minutes. This is it, Nicole Kidman! Either this or you`ll do the cat in Sabrina!

Ja nu kaut ko par Melu Gibsonu var teikt, tad to, ka viņam nepatīk ķēpāties ar sīkumiem. Vismaz paskatoties uz pēdējām trim viņa filmām šāds iespaids rodas. Sāk viņš ar "Drošsirdi" - trīsarpus stundas garu asiņainu sāgu par to, kā vienam skotam nogalina līgavu un kā viņš pēc tam cīnās ar angļiem (patiesību sakot, par šo filmu zinu tikai diezgan aptuveni, jo redzējis to pilnībā neesmu). Pēc tam nāca "Jēzus ciešanas" - asiņaina, lai gan ne pārāk gara, sāga par to, kā dažādi cilvēki sit Jēzu un visbeidzot viņu piesit krustā. Tagad nāk "Apocalypto" - nieka divas stundas garš episks vēstījums par maiju civilizācijas bojāeju. Der arī atzīmēt, ka Gibsons lielu vērību pievērš autentismam - kā Jēzus ciešanas bija senebreju un aramejiešu valodā, tā arī "Apocalypto" varoņi runā maiju mēlē (līdz ar to subtitrus izmanto droši vien 100% skatītāju, kas varētu būt par iemeslu tam, ka tie filmai nāk līdzi standarta komplektā). Ja pieiet filmai no tās puses kā "Klerkos 2" tika raksturots "Gredzenu pavēlnieks", tad šī ir filma, kurā vispirms pusi filmas indiāņi moka un nogalina citus indiāņus, bet otro pusi viens indiānis no pārējiem skrien prom. Uzfilmēts, protams, vienkārši ekselenti, indiāņi arī izskatās vairāk nekā autentiski (lai gan galvenais varonis, protams, ir tāds izteikts pretty boy), cik autentiska filmā ir maiju valoda, es spriest, dabiski, ka nevaru, tas pats attiecas arī uz rituāliem. Vienīgais filmas izteiktais mīnuss - visnotaļ primitīvais sižets, kas, iespējams, saistīts ar subtitrīgo valodu, jo stulbie skatītāji taču neko sarežģītu subtitros saprast nevarētu. Atkal vienīgi nevar saprast, vai šāda filma neveicinās negatīvu attieksmi pret Amerikas pamatiedzīvotājiem (tiem, kas indiāņi), kuri šeit daudzviet tiek rādīti negatīvā gaismā, bet visādiem debīliem -fobiem jebkurš mākslas darbs lieliski kalpo par ieroci savu stulbo teoriju pamatošanai (līdzās tam es, protams, neuzstāju nedz uz nepieciešamības pēc politkorektuma, nedz vajadzības kaut ko idiallizēt). Vērtējums salīdzinoši zems tādēļ, ka skaistajai formai izteikti pietrūkst satura.
