Forrest Gump
"He`s gump, he`s gump, he`s kinda square" that`s what Weird Al Yankovic had to say about the main character in this movie. You certainly know that Tom Hanks won the second Oscar in a row for his performance in this film. And deservedly so! Forrest Gump was a new kind of American hero, being far from smart he was a very warm, heartfelt person, that participated in the most important events of modern history. Elvis Presley got his hip shaking style from Forrests leg fixators. He started the unveiling of the Watergate incident by a phone call. From Vietnam he came out as a hero. He even invented the smiley. And to do that he didn`t need anything more that a very kind heart and no understaning of the world. He fell in love with a girl from a no good family, he loved her all his life, although she thought that Forrest didn`t know what love is. Anyway, you know all this already. What I must say - seing this film now I knew much more about the events shown in the film and therefore it was much funnier for me than it once was. And much sadder as well.
The Beatles Anthology 6
The sweet milk in the lives of the Beatles starts turning sour. They get booed from the Phillipines because of not going to a party of the local dictator. Thus the Beatles managed accidentally (for they didn`t go there just because they were lazy) to avoid losing their face by playing for the dictator. The Beatles decide to stop touring for nobody listens to their concerts but only screams by looking at them. The Beatles record "Sergeant Pepper" - a real milestone in modern music which showed that rock`n`roll can be much more than just music for dancing. "Penny Lane" and especially "A Day in the Life". The latter is probably the greatest song the Beatles ever did, and boy did they do many great songs. This song was also the very first one to feature the line "I`d love to turn you on." What was also cool was Paul admitting to reporters of using drugs. But it was cool - they way he did - saying that it was the reporters and not him who talked about him using drugs thus telling the youth that their idols were on drugs and supporting them taking drugs themselves.
Rafael Seligmann - The Milkman
This book was something new for me in several aspects. First, it was the first book by R.S. I read. Not too surprising though, for he isn`t that popular. Second, never before had I read a book where characters occasionaly speak in yiddish. Not that I learned anything from that language, apart from "Meschugge" and "Kuss mech in toches" which I knew before this book. Then the contents of the book were really untrivial - it`s about modern days of Jews in Germany and about what people`s attitudes towards Germans are, what they think of themselves and of the others. The leading character is a man in his early seventies who can`t accept that he`s got cancer (because he hasn`t got cancer), who can`t accept that his son lives with a German woman (although he himself also lives with a German woman), and who doesn`t want to spend a rather big amount of money for his friends eye surgery. The interesting aspect for me was how the Jews draw a very strict line between themselves and the "gojim". For a partly Jewish person like myself it was quite a surprise, it was also interesting to read about the different approaches towards the state of Israel and towards the Palestinians the German jews have nowadays. As a pure work of art the book ain`t no slouch either, but it`s surely mostly the content and not the form that made the difference for me.
Judas Priest - British Steel
The Science of Sleep
Ārprātīgi paredzama filma. Jau no pirmajām minūtēm bija skaidrs, ar ko tas viss beigsies.
William Faulkner - Sartoris
This was the first book where Faulkner wrote about his favourite characters - Flem Snoups gets his first chance to shine in this book, but mainly it`s about one of the sons of the old colonel Sartoris that has returned from WW1 where his twin brother Johnny has died. The other one is a loony for sure who enjoys driving a car way too fast and who doesn`t care whether he lives or dies. Not an especially groundbreaking book, but at least easier to read than the one about the intruders in the dust. Still I won`t be rereading it I suppose.
Uriah Heep - Innocent Victim
Kā jau minēju, "Uriah Heep" ir viena no mana tēva mīļākajām grupām, kuras vairāki albūmi atrodami viņa lenšu kolekcijā. Šķiet, ka "Innocent Victim" nav viens no tur atrodamajiem ierakstiem, toties tas ir atrodams šaitan. To gan es nezinu, kāpēc es savā īstajā pirmajā mp3 diskā gribēju dabūt veselus 4 Uriah Heep albūmus (faktiski tur ir tikai 3 iekļauti, no viena ir tikai dažas dziesmas), bet fakts ir tāds, ka tā ir.
Frank Lucius Packard - The Adventures of Jimmie Dale
Es nezinu, kāpēc tas tā man ir raksturīgs, bet parasti pirms sākt lasīt grāmatu, es nemēdzu apskatīties, ko no šī darba varētu gaidīt. Iespējams, ja šāda ieraduma man nebūtu, daži zemas kvalitātes literārie darbi būtu man tikuši aiztaupīti.
The Beatles Anthology 7
The summer of love has started, although it probably wasn`t the way we think about it now. George even went to the States but he didn`t like those drugged kids thus deciding to stop taking LSD himself. When the Beatles were with Maharishi (an Indian spiritual person) in India their long time manager Brian Epstein died of an OD (or something like that) thus starting all the really big trouble (probably the previous big trouble was Lennon saying that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus - although I find that to be completely true). But now they decide to start all the shit they can start - they make the "Magical Mystery Tour" film. The idea behind it was probably not that bad, but what came out of it was quite horrible indeed (apart from the performances of "Your Mother Should Know" and "I`m the Walrus"). "Yellow Submarine" cartoon on the other hand totally rocked, but the whole "Apple" thing went completely nowhere, and I guess it was said right in the "Rutles" film: "At one stage they were losing money faster than the British government."
The Football Factory
A film about football hooligans. Man, are those people stupid. They don`t care about the team who`s supporters they supposedly are, they only care about kicking each other as hard as possible. I may be a fan of footy but I`d prefer to have at least a single goal on screen when I watch a football film and not only a lot of fighting pricks. The message of the film may be a positive one, but I don`t care. Some people claim that the film is meant to be idolizing those hooligans but I really doubt that, I`d rather say that the film had quite a lot of struggle in terms of a plot which is close to non-existant. At some stages the film tries to be funny but doesn`t quite succeed at that, at others it tries to be a lot like "Trainspotting" but it ain`t trippy so it`s mainly silly. Yet I can`s say that I didn`t like it, I just don`t think that there`s a need for films like this one in the world.
