Janosch - Polski Blues

Three men on their way to make a film stop in a small Polish village to meet a man who has been an idol to one of them - a retired jazz trompet player named Zdenek Koziol. The village is poor, the people drink a lot, still there is hope in there. Zdenek and Zbigniev, his friend from the days of youth, live in the village for no apparent reason. Zbigniev, although not believing in God, is the local priest. He forgives all sins to the people for he knows that it makes him feel better. Zdenek has gone partly crazy because of his rememberance of his childhood where has was told how great God is and that his vodka-drinking and everyone hitting father is to be considered as a representer of God for him, and that it`s bad to sin but still if a person sins much and repents its sins it`s good. And that it is good to kill in war, for the weapons have been blessed, etc., etc. I enjoyed the book because it shows that despite all the bullshit going on in the world there is a light also, that it`s what we make out of it is what counts.

Spiklenci Slasti

One of the latest works of Jan Svankmajer. This film here althogh seems to be in czech is understandable for everybody - because it features absolutely no dialogue (and no monologue, either). It`s about six people with a bit strange forms of fetishism - one man with a chicken suit, another one who`s in love with a news girl from TV and uses her for his sexual fantasies, the third man (who is the husband of the news girl) specialises in erotic brushes; a woman who works at the post makes balls from bread; a second woman (who lives next to the first man) is a sadistic person, while the news girl has fun with them fishes. Overall it`s a bit crazy. And therefore I like it. The ending is also nice.

The Muppets Take Manhattan

From a movie for children one should not expect very much - a few jokes, nice music - that`s basically it. Sadly the film here doesn`t offer enough even for a category pretty low standarts. Most of the songs are terrible, dialogue could be written by any six year old. What does the positive side have? The rats were cool, and the frogs (except the leading one).

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This is a movie based on a book based on a film called "Elvira, the mistress of the dark". Do you remember that black haired sexy witch with the curves that could drive you wild? Now that was one hell of a film! But what does that little dork Harry got to do with her? Did he screw her or what? Nah, she`s his sister, and that`s a certain thing. Ok, not a sister maybe, but a cousine definetely. Do you remember when her evil uncle killed her mother but she somehow survived and later was raised by some idiots? It`s the same here in Harry Potter, and even the sequence showing those days was if not an exact copy, then a cover version of this great (!) film. If you`re after plain and stupid characters, boy you`re in for a wild ride! There`s the evil dude living in a diary who seems to be a forever reappearing villain that`s bound to last a lunchtime, and there`s the little guy with his magic wand trying to stop him. There`s certainly not enought John Cleese as Nearly Headless nick to save this movie from being a useless cinematic cash-in. Ok, it may be not the worst film for children, but heck - can you name a film for children that seems stupid even for three year-olds? At least I can`t.

The Coral - Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker

This is one of the relatively new bands coming from Liverpool, with a style of something like British garage rock. They are apperantly quite big but I don`t care who`s big and who`s not. And the Coral aren`t particulary interesting (at least judging by this record). Not that it doesn`t try to be diverse but it`s plainly not too interesting and not too listenable. I read somewhere that the band tried to be a bit more alternative than it had been on the previous records, but I don`t think that it did them much good (not that I had heard anything else by them). For example, "Venom Cable" almost made my ears bleed with some silly unlistenable sounds. "I forgot my name" on the contrary is fairly good, reminding me of "The Monks" - an obscure sixties band. "Sorrow or the Song" is a nice romantic piece. But "Auntie`s operation" is a fest of bullshit. It`s something like an easy version for "Catholic Schoolgirls Rule" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed together with some song that the Kink could have done in the sixties. "Grey Harpoon" with a rhythm coming from the hip hop world is something quite amazing. But the biggest problem of the album is - it`s just too short to have the amount of bad songs it has. If there was something like 10 minutes of nonsense on an album with the lenght of an hour it would be ok, but this album goes on for only 28 minutes.

n/a - Circo di Madrugada

Now this is not a simple thing to describe. CdM is a weird thing that somehow has got the name "circus". If you`re looking for train baboons or dancing rats this isn`t what you should see. And don`t even expect to see those nice little fellows called clowns. Man, do I hate those! Yuck! Anyhow, Circo di Madrugada is more of a happening than of a circus. Probably it would be preferable to go to it after consuming some drugs. I may be wrong but how would you otherwise fall into a state of trance when a silly fellow shouts "Angels!" some fifty times over a few minutes. After that you`ll probably see some weirdos flying on ropes to the centre of the arena. And after that you`ll be listening to some wild half ethno, half latino music and watching those so called angels dance. If you`ll call their way of moving a dance. In short it`s somewhat similar to what lemmings do in "Madagascar", only there`s no one shouting "I like to move it, move it". Is this a thing to enjoy? Yes and no. I was a bit cold and a bit tired so I didn`t enjoy it that much. Especially considering that it wasn`t the actual performance but just a dress rehearsal. Yet, since I got in for free thanks to some friends I say - thumbs up (more than down at least)!

Kazuo Ishiguro - An Artist of the Floating World

Blink 182 - The Mark, Tom and Travis Show

Skolas laikos Blinki bija viena no manām iecienītākajām grupām un vislielākā loma šajā lietā bija viņu videoklipam dziesmai "All the small things", kurā tika parodēti visādi popmūzikas tirliņi a la Backstreet Boys, Britnija utt. Šis grupas koncertieraksts savulaik vispār bija manā izpratnē kolosāls - pateicoties "Words of Wisdom" segmentam "everybody say: fuck fuck shit fuck!".

Little Britain: Episodes 1,2,3

This is the modern Monty Python so they say. And it really has a bit of feeling that the Circus team had. Yet it doesn`t work quite as well. I can`t deny that the two guys behind this project do have some guts - they don`t care for being politically correct. They poke fun at the fat, they poke fun at the gay, they poke fun at you. Yet their jokes don`t seem to have too much diversity. The whole show is mostly based on a limited number of typical characters that do the same things in different situations. In MPFC you also had a bit of that but rarely beyond the limits of a single show. Here you`ll encounter a fat chick talking gibberish nonsense in most of the episodes (not that I`ve seen them all but I`ve read about it). The introductions to every show are quit cool though. For example: "Britain. We`ve had running water over ten years, and we`ve invented the cat." Have the Britons invented humour as well? Probably they have, yet being the inventors of football they aren`t that good at it nowadays. And it`s a bit similar with jokes and sacrasm.

Blood Diamond
