Billy Idol - Cyberpunk

Kādreiz man Bilijs Aidols likās ļoti labs pankdziedātājs. Taču nekad "Cyberpunk" man nešķita labs albūms. Un arī tagad nešķiet. Protams, no panka tur nav ne miņas, bet kiberiskā daļa ir tik pretīga, ka pat vārdos to izteikt grūti. Kamēr normāli es pirms to novērtēt, kādu ierakstu klausos reizes četras-piecas, "Cyberpunk" es pilnībā noklausījos tikai vienu reizi un tāpat jūtos pietiekami smagi cietis.

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

"Sestdiena, asiņainā sestdiena" reiz bija man mīļākais BS albūms.

21 Grams

It`s the weight that a person loses after the death. Probably it`s the weight of the human soul. Not that the film would tell that much about it. Basically it`s about a man who`s dying from a heart disease (caused by smoking!), a woman that has lost her family in a car accident and a man who has caused that car accident. Benitio del Torro and Sean Penn are the leading males while I can`t tell one american actress from another. The main importance is the timeline of the film that doesn`t go forward or backwards but is somewhat of a jigsaw puzzle so that until somewhere in the middle of the film you don`t really understand what`s happening. I still think that without that the film would lose much of its quality. I certainly expected more although it`s still a good film.

The Bicycle Thief

A film directed by Vittorio De Sica. Ranked among the best of all time. And not without a reason. It has a lot of significance for me, who knows what it`s like when your bicycle is stolen. And that`s the case here - Antonio Ricci needs to get his bicycle back for without it he would lose his job and would have no chance to feed his family. Along with his son Bruno he searches the post-war Rome trying to find the man in the german cap whom he saw stealing his bicycle. Not a very happy turns his quest to be, and the ending is not promising at all. It`s the way things happen in life and I know the taste. P.S. According to IMDB to make the film more realistic De Sica didn`t hire professional actors, for example, Bruno was just some kid from the street.

Freaks

A film by the director of the original Dracula (Tod Browning). Not that I have seen the vampire movie, but now I`ve seen `Freaks`. The plot isn`t really great - a beautiful female circus performer pretends to fall in love with a dwarf because of the dwarve`s wealth. And she gets punished for it. But neither the plot, nor the partly silly acting is the main attraction of the film. It`s about the freaks - which are real and not some stupid Hollywood special effects - as a matter of fact, what special effects could one create back in 1932? The film features a man without limbs, siamese twins, a bearded woman, a human skeleton, many dwarves, etc., etc. Scary it may seem and so it was designed to be. By the way, this here is not the full version of the film - originally it was about 90 minutes long but later was cut to 64 minutes. I really don`t know how disturbing the rest of the film must have been if even after the cut the film is still creepier than most horror flicks. Yeah, and it was banned in the UK for 30 years. Does that say something to you (althogh there`s no rude language or naked skin around for miles)?

Haruki Murakami - Hear the Wind Sing

Savā debijas romānā Haruki Murakami jau ir tas pats Haruki Murakami, kuru vēlāk iemīlējuši miljoni grāmatu lasītāju visapkārt pasaulei.

Kurt Vonnegut - Mother Night

No tiem Vonnegūta romāniem, kurus lasīju vēl skolas laikā, "Māte nakts" man atmiņā bija palicis kā viens no spožākajiem viņa darbiem. Tagad varu tikai pārliecināties, ka attiecībā uz viņu mana gaume īpaši mainījusies nav un es "Māti nakti" joprojām uzskatu par fenomenālu grāmatu.

John Fowles - Mantissa

A man with amnesia awakes in a hospital where untraditional methods to help people to remember are being used. He finds out that the hospital is really in his mind and so are the perversions. Although I consider myself a fan of modern literature this piece here is a bit too pornographic to me. To summarise everything in one sentence - Mr. Fowles is trying to show your humble servant that writing a novel is the same as having sex (or something like that). There are some quite interesting dialogues between Miles and Eratho but between all the crap it still doesn`t make a good point. I`d never think that a man who wrote `The Collector` could create something like that. It`s not even disgusting - it`s just plainly bad and pretends to be a porn book at some stages, without being really sarcastic.

Employee of the Month

Jau otro filmu pēc kārtas konstatēju, ka neesmu bijis pietiekoši labi informēts. Kā es varēju palaist garām faktu, ka šajā filmā galveno sieviešu lomu atveido Džesika Simpsone, es patiešām nesaprotu. Tikpat labi tur varētu būt piedalījusies Britnija, un arī to es nebūtu piefiksējis. Vienreiz Simpsoni filmā jau esmu redzējis - pilnīgi idiotiskajā "Dukes of Hazzard" un tur viņa bija fenomenāli slikta. Šeit viņa nebija labāka. Vienīgais glābiņš - filmas veidotāji droši vien paši saprata, ko viņi ir izdarījuši, tāpēc daudz iespēju runāt Džesikai šai filmā nebija. Vairāk viņai bija iespēju rādīt pupus, kuri neapšaubāmi ir daudz talantīgāki par Džesiku Simpsoni kopumā.

The Butterfly Effect

A man travels to the past to make life better than it was before. Sounds silly and familiar? No, in this case it doesn`t. Aston Kusher - Jesse from "Dude, where`s my car?" is good at portraying Evan, the guy with his blackouts. And the plot is also quite amazing. I probably can say that the ending was a bit too happy, but on the other hand - it was just perfect (although Evan ending up locked up in a mental hospital for life would be another good option). Anyway, the fat goth person is really nice. Sometimes there may be some dangerous plot holes around that could happen because of Evan changing his past but they are not too big and everything could be explained in the terms of the logic of the film. A heart felt film it seems to me, no matter what the critics say that decided to call it a flop. After all, who am I to obey the general critical opinion - to believe that `Citizen Kane` is the best film of all times, battling only with `Godfather`?
