Jim Carrey is a respected comedian on the other side of the Atlantic. But he still does pretty lame films. And if he does a good film - nobody watches it. MM&I was quite a popular film, which meens - it is surely dumb. But a film being dumb doesn`t always implicate it being also bad. Well, in this case it does. Charlie is a nice Rhode island cop, but his life is nowhere near as nice - his wife left him, his three kids are black, nobody except for the kids respects him. And he`s got a split personality - there`s this guy Hank living inside him, who unlike the always optimistic Charlie, is a silly tough guy. Charlie (and Hank) get involved with Irene, a former girlfriend of a mafiozo. But the problem lies in the fact that both of them (Hank and Charlie) fall in love with Irene, being jealous one on another. And there are cops following the whole three of them (the four, if you wish, as they pick up an albino guy called Whitey). Still, there are very little laughs in this film, and nothing except for laughs it even doesn`t want to offer. Oh, I almost forgot, that it`s a Romantic comedy. So, be it, it`s still boring, not funny and everything like that. Making silly faces doesn`t always work, just as its proven here.

One thing you can`t deny about CCR is that the songs of this band are catchy. On this very short album (less than 26 minutes) for instance there are several classical pieces of John Fogerty`s masterful songwriting, including "Bad Moon Rising" - my absolutely favourite song by CCR. Apart from that there are "Wrote a song for everyone" - a love ballad about a guy who can give his heart to everyone but the one he loves. Then there`s "Lodi"

Erich Hackl ist ein ganz grausamer Schriftsteller, seine Werke (wenigstens die zwei, die ich gelesen habe), handeln nur von der Nazizeit und erhalten ganz viel grausames. "Abschied von Sidonie" ist wenigstens in einem Aspekt relativ ungewoehlich - Sidonie ist ein Zigeunermaedchen und keine Juedin. Ich weiss nicht so richtig, warum man ganz selten von den Zigeunern, die durch das nazi-Regime ermordert wurden, spricht, aber hier tut Erich Hackl es. Sidonie wird von ihrer Mutter neben einem Krankenhaus verlassen in 1933 und sie wird bei einer Deutscher (Oesterreichischer) Familie erzogen, sie hat kein gutes Kopf, aber ist ein freundliches un braves Maedchen, dass viele im Dorf moegen, obwohl sie ziemlich dunkel in Haut ist. Dennoch, wenn das zweite Weltkrieg losgeht und auch Oesterreich daran teil nehmen muss, muss Sidonie ihre Fosterfamilie (ok, ich weiss, dass es "foster parents" nur in Englisch gibt, es ist mir aber egal) und so gibt es Abschied von Sidonie und nur spaeter lernen ihre "Eltern" kennen, dass ihr Leben in Auschwitz beendet hat.

Eigentlich hatte ich ueberhaupt keine Ahnung, dass Frisch un Duerrenmatt bekannt waren. Ok, es ist ja kein grosses Wunder - die Schweiz hatte nur zwei ganz grosse Schriftsteller im 20-ten Jahrhundert und sie waren ja auch Menschen derselben Epoche. Obwohl ich eher naeher zu Duerrenmatts als zu Frisch`s Werken stehe, muss ich sagen, dass aus diesem Briefwechsel es ganz klar folgt, dass Frisch ein sympatischer Typ als F.D. gewesen ist. Wenn man ihre Freundschaft als das Sujet des Buches beschreiben kann, dann beginnt alles mit einem Brief von Frisch zu Duerrenmatt, in dem der damals schon beruehmte Schriftsteller seinen juengeren Kollegen fuer sein erstes Werk lobt, der Duerrenmatt ist natuerlich froh darueber und sie werden Freunde. Spaeter geht es aber mit der Freundschaft immer schlechter, da sie einander zu kritisieren beginnen und Duerrenmatt schreibt auch in der Presse toedliche Kritik von Frisches Werken. Frisch fand das nicht toll und ausserte auch seine eigene Meinung. Am Ende sprachen sie miteinander nicht mehr und schrieben auch keine Briefe und starben fast gleichzeitig. So geht es.

Dreamworks is the studio that gave life to Shrek. And Shrek 2! And it will give life to Shrek 3, 4, and Shrek: The Beginning. Sadly it also does other things than just making CGI with the green monstrous creature and that perfectly lovable donkey. Oh, no, they thought to themselves: if we can master a donkey, we`re sure smart enough to handle a zebra, a lion, a giraffe and a begemoth. Oh, no you can`t! You just suck at doing stuff like that! Who on earth thought that asking Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Ali G to do the vioices will be a good idea? Ok, Shrek had that silly Austin Powers person - but he never once went over the top, while Eddie Murphy goes over the top only in cases when it`s required (e.g. all the time). The plot on this cartoon is silly even for a cartoon, the graphics have about as many edges as few edges the script has. Most of the jokes are not only forced but also unfunny. The penguins and the monkeys are a bit better than the lead characters, but apart from that - the cartoon sucked. Ok, I shall not rate it particulary low since it`s destined to be watched by children, but remember that if it was made for adults it would probably be considered about as good as "Ali G in da house"

Bisher war ich ueberzeugt, dass Fassbinder kein Regiseur fuer mich ist. Von seinem Film "Warnung vor einer heiligen Nutte" habe ich nichts verstanden und habe das Film ein wenig doof gefunden. Diesmal hat mich Fassbinder aber ueberrascht - "Lola", seine Version ueber das Thema des Blauen Engels (ich hatte vergessen, was das fuer ein Film war, bis ich in die IMDB hineinschaute) ist nicht nur visuell spektakulaer, sondern auch spannend zum Ansehen. Lola ist eine Saengerin/Prostituirte in einem Puff in einer Stadt, wo alle maechtige Maenner die Abende mit Frauen zum Kaufen verbringen. Lola ist die persoenliche Hurre des Bauunternehmer`s Schukert, von dem sie auch eine Tochter hat. Jetzt kommt in die Stadt aber ein neuer Bauleiter (ich bin nicht so klar, wie sein Posten eigentlich leitet). Der Mann ist ein ganz konservativer und braver Kerl und alles geht ihm gut mit den Raubvoegeln (Machthaber) der Stadt, bis er sich in Lola verliebt, ohne zu wissen, dass sie eine Prostituirte ist. Sie will ja nicht, dass er es von ihr zu wissen lernt, eigentlich mag sie doch den Mann, obwohl sie auch ihren Schukert mag. Na ja, dann entscheidet sich von Bohm (der Bauleiter) die Lola zu heiraten, aber sein "Freund" Esslin verraet ihm alles ueber die dunkle Seite der Stadt (ohne von der Lola-Affaire des von Bohms zu wissen). Dann geht der von Bohm wirklich los, veranlaesst ein Krieg gegen die Korruption der Stadt, heiratet Lola aber zum Ende, ohne zu wissen, dass sie noch immer die Matrone seines Feindes Schukert bleibt. Uebrigens ist Barbara Sukowa reizend in der Rolle von Lola und obwohl sie eine Nutte spielt, ist sie auch Person fast sympatisch. Im vergleich zu anderen Werken Fassbinders ("Heiliger Nutte" und Drehbuch fuer "Water drops on burning rocks" gibt`s hier fast nichts skandaloeses - nicht so viel nackte Koerper, keine Homosexualitaet, und so weiter), ich muss jetzt aber sagen, dass der Fassbinder ein sehr vitaler und interessanter Regisseur gewesen ist und dass ich noch ein Paar seine Filme bestimmt anschauen werde.

Mūzikas industrija smird! Man nav skaidrs, kā tas ir iespējams, ka tādam īstenam rokmūzikas (un ne tikai) ģēnijam kā Tomam Veitsam viņa ilgās karjeras laikā nevienu vienīgu disku nav izdevies iedabūt ASV čārtu 20-niekā un pat 50-niekā viņš ir bijis tikai pēdējās desmitgades laikā, bet, piem., "Rain Dogs" lielākais sasniegums ir bijusi 188. vieta. Tikām šis albūms ir kolosāls savā savdabīgumā, daudzveidīgajos veitsismos, brīžiem pilnīgi absurdajās lirikās un pustrakajā instrumentējumā. Zināmā mērā to varētu nosaukt par melodiskāku variāciju par Captain Beefheart "Trout Mask Replica", lai gan patiesībā tas tomēr ir izteikts Veitss un nevis kaut kāds Gaļassirds, ko "Lietus suņi" piedāvā. Nepilnas 54 minūtes garajā platē Veitss pamanījies iedabūt 19 kompozīcijas, kuras visas ir pilnas un pabeigtas dziesmas, tikai lielākoties tās nav diez ko garas. Riktīgais "blieziens" (ja šādu vārdu var attiecināt uz šo ierakstu) sākas jau ar pirmajām kompozīcijām - mazliet bandītisko "Singapore", uz otru pusi izgriezto blūzu "Clap Hands" un komisko polku "Cemetary Polka", kurā vienkārši perfekti iederas ļoti savdabīgā Veitsa dziedāšanas maniere. Šajā platē Veitss pamanījies iekļaut gan salīdzinoši "normālas" kompozīcijas - tādas kā skaistā "Diamonds & Gold", tipiskā Veitsa balāde "Hang Down Your Head", romantiskā "Blind Love", gan mazliet trakākus gabalus, kā piemēram, albūma tituldziesmu, kurā Veitss apgalvo "For I am a rain dog too". Kopumā jāsaka, ka es pat īsti nezinu, kas ir tas, kas Veitsu padara tik īpašu - viņa muzikālā daļa ir pustraka, viņa dziesmu teksti ir pustraki un balss viņam ir kā pilnīgi trakam vecim, bet varbūt tieši tas viņu padara tik baudāmu. Vajadzēs paklausīties vēl kādus citus viņa ierakstus.

The second time around Hitchcock offers me more than he did before. This film here is really a thriller unlike `Rear Window` which only had nieces pieces of dialogue, watching this one at some times I felt really scared. It`s possible that I would prefer the mystery not to be unraveled for that would leave me even more confused but the way it`s done in the film is still pretty impressive. Yes, and Kim Novak not only acts but also looks great.

Many years have passed since I last saw it. Then it seemed kinda boring, too depressive and everything that goes with it. Now I say that it is truly great. A little sight on to the plotline - a scientist triest to transplant a part of humans genitals onto a dog but in an unexpected way the dog turns into a man. Where the problem lies - he becomes much worse as a man than he was as a dog. It seems possible that soon I will add it to my list of favourite movies.

Mr. Eich himself called the stories/essays he wrote "moles". This is the kind of book which makes you dizzy and raving. It`s whacky like nothing else you`ll be likely to encounter. You see, it makes very little sense most of the time, for the stories are weird. They are strange and very short. Like there`s this one guy flying in the direction contrary to the rotation of the earth trying to save up some time. Or a person capable of living only in a place starting with PA. Most of them have no story to tell at all, they are just absurd images. This would make a great psychedelic experience. Heck, it makes a great psychedelic experience! It has no point, or I simply don`t see one, but I don`t require it anyway.
