Peeping Tom

85

House of Usher

7
Ašera nama sabrukums ir viens no slavenākajiem Edgara Alana Po stāstiem, bet Rodžera Kormena režisētā tāda pat nosaukuma filma ir droši vien populārākā no viņa darbu ekranizācijām ar leģendārā šausmu kino aktiera Vincenta Praisa darbību. Relatīvi mazbudžeta filma (kas gan savai B klases studijai bija ļoti liela budžeta projekts) risinās sabrukumam tuvā muižā, iesaistot itin minimālu aktieru ansambli - līdzās trim galvenajiem varoņiem ir tikai viens palīgtēls, vairāk aktieru uz ekrāna gluži vienkārši neparādās.

Butterfield 8

The Bachelors

Atvaļinājuma laikā izlasīju trīs Mjūrielas Spārkas romānus (vienu gan, kā vēlāk noskaidroju, biju lasījis jau iepriekš), un "Vecpuiši" ir viens no tiem.

The Ballad of Peckham Rye

6.0
Visnotaļ dīvaini - pēc divu vēlīno Mjurielas Sparkas romānu izlasīšanas manās rokās nonāca viens no tiem viņas darbiem, kas uzrakstīti autores ziedu laikos (kā iepriekšējais pirms viņas slavenākā darba "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" - un atšķirībā no viņas nebūtiskajiem darbiem, šī grāmata man nemaz nepatika. Ko no tā var secināt?

A Burnt-Out Case

7.5

The Apartment

8.0
The Apartment is on the IMDB list of 250 greatest films of all times, therefore there is no doubt that it is considered by many a great film. Of course participation on this list doesn`t guarantee much, still "The Apartment" is there right above "Blade Runner". I can`t say that I completely disagree with such an opinion but I would have my doubts about whether this film is as good as some claim it to be. C.C.Baxter (Jack Lemmon, famous from "Some like it hot") works in a very big company as a very small man. But he has some kind of strategy for becoming successful and wealthy: he lets some of his more influential colleagues use his apartment when they want to have the evening with some chick they`ve just picked up. And C.C. hopes that those fellows will help him advance in the company. Everything would be fine for him, apart from all his neighbours thinking that he is a sex maniac and apart from him sometimes having to spend the night on a bench in the park, until the boss of the company finds out about the brothel Baxter has in his apartment. As you can probably guess, Mr. Sheldrake (the director) also wants to have access to Baxter`s place. And it would be alright, were the girl he takes there not the same girl whom Baxter also loves. Fran works in one of the elevators of the company and she likes Baxter also, but she`s in love with Sheldrake who has promised her to leave his wife, but who thinks of no such thing of course, for he isn`t that sick. When Fran makes a suicide attempt in Baxter`s apartment and he finds her there they eventually could get together but she still loves the Sheldrake person (who is a stupid bastard and who deserves to die, if you ask me), so she and he both remain in their places. And with good results - Sheldrake gets kicked out by his wife so now he theoretically can marry Fran, and Baxter is promoted to Assistant Director at the company. Everything would be fine, if not for the fact that Sheldrake is an asshole. So when he asks the key to Baxter`s apartment once again he decides to cut the crap and quits the company - and I gotta admit, he does it with some style. And as you can surely guess - Fran also quits upon Sheldrake and the ending is a joyful union of the couple of good characters. What I found a bit silly in the film were some of its premises. I can imagine that company bosses could prefer an employees apartment to a hotel room for it`s not only cheaper but also gives more discrecy, yet I can`t believe that not one of the neighbours noticed that it wasn`t Baxter who had orgies every evening but some complete strangers and how nobody noticed all those strangers in the house and believed Baxter to be one hell of a sex bomb, who he wasn`t of couse. The film was funny enough, although some participants overacted a lot, for instance, Fran`s brother in law was about as believable in his role as I would be. Music in such films is also very generic and uninspiring, but overall it was still a fun film to watch, although it was more drama than comedy in fact.

Die Rote

8.0
After finishing reading the second book by this writer I`m becoming more and more convinced that this Andersch was a very good writer indeed despite the fact that he`s virtually unknown in the part of the world where I come from. "Die Rote" is mostly told through the perspective of its main hero - a woman named Franziska that has just left her husband (or was it a lover) Herbert and her lover (who most certainly wasn`t a husband) Joachim. She flees from Milan where she was last with Herbert, she doesn`t have too much money and she ends up in Venice where she tries to start a new life. That doesn`t seem simple at all since she only has a few days before the money runs out and she may be pregnant (although there`s no certainty about it). Parallel to the life of Franziska we encounter an old seaman and a middleaged Italian violion player who once participated in the Spanish civil war and doesn`t have much to dream about. Franziska`s senseless existence doesn`t last long - only until she meets O`Malley - an Irish fellow who was meant to be a British spy in Germany during WW2 but was persuaded by a certain inspector Kramer to switch sides. Now, long after the was O`Malley still is planning to have his revenge upon Kramer for he has taken the most dear thing for an Englishman - O`Malley will never be a gentleman again after he`s done what he`s done. Still Kramer doesn`t take O`Malley seriously for he doesn`t believe that the Irishman has the guts to kill him. Only when he meets Franziska, now a more grieve enemy to him, he becomes suspicious for her being able to give him away to the German police (for nazi war criminals aren`t particulary at that time). In the end O`Malley poisons Kramer and leaves Franziska on her own (which is no surprise since he`s gay), although he had promised her to take her as a companion on a long voyage on see. What happens next, is not described, and who would expect anything else from a typical postmodern novel? Stylistically the books switches all the time between direct speech and actions of the characters on one side, and their thoughts on the other. I liked it, and it only means that it`s most likely not the last book by Andersch I`ll ever read.

Kiss Kiss

8.5
Having already said it once, I shall repeat myself: Roald Dahl is one hell of a creator of horrific and very masterful stories. There`s 11 stories in here. And not one of them is a stinker or a filler. So I guess I`ll spend a whole sentence for every single one of them. "The Landlady" is a sad yet funny story about a woman that specialises in taxydermy of her loved ones. "William and Mary" is a tribute to "Professor Dovel`s Head" - a soviet sci-fi - where a woman finds out that her husbands brain is artificially kept alive after his death and she at last has a chance to repay to him everything she didn`t like about him. "The Way up to Heaven" is about a woman who was always afraid of getting anywhere too late and how her husband took advantage from that, but in the end it was him who died in the elevator. "Parson`s Pleasure" is a funny story about a guy who buys antiques for peanuts and sells them for zillions - he accidentally finds a buffet done by Thomas Chipendale but he`s too miserly and he fails badly. "Mrs Bixby and the Colonels Coat" - I read this at school some years ago - is about a woman that gets a precious coat as a gift from her lover and comes up with a plan to keep the coat without receiving questions from her husband about the coat (you can guess that she also fails). "Royal Jelly" is somewhat of a horror tale where a man feeds to his newborn daughter bee jelly thus turning her and himself into bees. "Genesis and Catastrophe" is a weird tale about how Adolf Hitler was born. "Edward the Conqueror" tells us how composer Liszt was reincarnated as a cat and how he died. "Pig" is a very tragical story about a man who becomes meat. And finally there`s "The Champion of the world" - an optimistic (slightly) tale about steeling pheanants. Overall: this will make you laugh, this will make you shiver, and you won`t feel no sympathy for the poor unlucky people. Dahl is for your joy not for making you feel miserable.

Breathless

6.5
Jean-Luc Godard once again. This time it`s a crime movie about a man who kills a cop and wants to flee with his girlfriend from Parice to Rome. Most of the time he does very little for succeeding in his task though. The girl is a young American who works selling `New York Harald Tribune` on the streets of Paris and doesn`t really know if she loves Michael. Neither does she know who her boyfriend really is. Not that she cares when she finds out. The film may seem a bit odd and it`s just what it should be like. At least it`s much more entertaining than `My life to live` and a bit tighter structured. Although I don`t know yet why Godard is so obsessed with that Tribune newspaper which seems to appearing in most films of his. Yeah, Jean Paul Belmondo is the star of the film though I must admit that I don`t really like his fat lips. I know that it`s good for an Italian mafia person but does this look unpretty indeed.
