Te nu gan man jāatzīst, ka "Tubthumper" nekādi nav mans iecienītākais Chumbawamba albūms. Tad jau pat "Readymades" ar pārāk deju mūzikaino vai "Pictures of starving children" ar totāli nepieradināto skaņu man patīk labāk. Protams, "Tuthumper" bija grupas lielais izrāviens - tā dziesma, kas saucas gandrīz tāpat kā albūms, patiešām ir visai lielisks gabals un tas abos Chumbas koncertos, kur esmu bijis klāt, spēja iekustināt publiku, kura neko citu par šo grupu nemaz nezināja. Arī otrs albūma singls - "Amnesia" - kopumā ir visai veiksmīgs, taču abās šajās dziesmās kaut kā tāda, kas parādās virknē labāko Chumbawambas kompozīciju, manuprāt, pietrūkst. Virkne gabalu diskā ir vispār nebaudāmi - piemēram, "Smalltown" ir vienkārši šausmīga dziesma. Un vispār - bīti te ir pārāk spēcīgi un savā ziņā trakāki nekā "Readymeidos". "Scapegoat" muzikāli ir gandrīz vai latviešu deju mūzikas līmenī, un tas ir ļoti bēdīgs līmenis. Praktiski no šī diska vērts klausīties tikai pirmās divas dziesmas - viena tā pati "i get no town" ("i get knocked down"), Amnēzija un vēl "Drip Drip Drip". Viss pārējais - miskastē.

A collection of Monty Python sketches from the first two seasons of the TV series. As it often is with sketches they are quite often hit-and-miss. I guess everyone could make his own collection of best stuff from MPFC about that he`d say that there can be nothing better than it, this collection is just one man`s opinion (ok, there may have been several people involved but figuratively it`s still one man if that one man isn`t me). Highlights in this collection include the "nudge-nudge" sketch, Lumberjack song, The self defence sketch, the english-hungarian dictionary etc., etc. This doesn`t rate quite up to the quality of any of MPFC motion pictures simply because this stuff is just a collection without any backbone but it doesn`t mean that one can`t have a good laugh with something completely different.

Вообще-то надо признать, что "Попса" - это очень даже попсовый фильм. Даже такой человек как я, который не слишком интересуется русским кино, уже пару фильмов на данную тематику видел (не далее как в прошлом году в автобусе в Венгрию мы с моей невестой - ныне женой - смотрели "Ландыш серебристый"). Сюжет в "Попсе" примерно такой-же как в Ландыше. Молодая девка под именем Славка приезжает в Москву, чтобы покорить столицу как певица и авторша собственных песен. Год назад в ее деревне побывала известная московская продюсерша Лариса и сказала Славке заехать к ней, если та вдруг забредет в Москву. Вот Славка и весь год собирала деньги, чтобы добраться до Москвы и стать там примой сцены. Однако оказывается, что она не совсем правильно Ларису поняла, все же благодаря своей настойчивости и живости она шанса у Ларисы добивается и проводит с ней в месте один день в Москвке, по дороге знакомясь с закулисами попсовой индустрии. Оказывается, что там одни развратники, да наркаши, да шизики и что быть звездой - это не фунт изюма. В принципе, фильм очень простой - ничем не удивляет, ничего особо в голове не остается. Единственная дельная мысль - когда Славка говорит, что попса ей не нравится и что она, дескать, лучше умеет, а Лариса ей: а ты Тома Вайтса знаешь? а этого блюз-гитариста? Нет? Так куда лезешь? Да вот жаль, что лично я из этого фильма ничего нового не узнал. Тогда вопрос - а зачем мне его смотреть то было? Кажется - пользы никакой.

Par spīti manai politikai rakstīt oriģinālvalodā, šeit par oriģinālvalodu uzskatīšu latviešu mēli, tā kā vispār mūzikā valoda ir salīdzinoši sekundāra. Tiesa, "Badā mirstošu bērnu attēli pārdod ierakstus" ir viens no tiem gadījumiem, kad teksti ir pat ļoti nozīmīgi. Ja nu kāds nezina, varu pastāstīt šo to iz šī albūma vēstures. Šis 86. gadā iznākušais ripulis bija pirmais Čumbas LP un tas lielā mērā bija veltīts neilgi pirms tā notikušajam pasākumam "Live Aid" - vienam no visu laiku ievērojamākajiem labdarības koncertiem. Čumba par šo pasākumu sajūsmā nebija un tālab arī veltīja tam šo albūmu. Varētu jautāt - kā tā? kam var būt iebildumi pret labdarību Āfrikas bērnu labā? Chumbawamba pārmetumi virknei mūziķu par šo pasākumu ir visai saprotami un tie izteikti albūma pirmajā dziesmā "How to get your band on television", kurā visādiem Poliem Makartnijiem, grupai Queen, Deividam Bovijam un Klifam Ričardam pārmet liekulību un piedalīšanos šajā pasākumā, lai spodrinātu savu pabalējušo vārdu. Vismaz gadījumā ar Queen (eh, mana bērnības mīļākā grupa) viņiem var pilnībā piekrist - pirms Live Aid šamiem sen nebija nekādu hītu un tikai ar šo koncertu viņi atjaunoja sabiedrības interesi par sevi, turklāt Queen jau nu patiešām nebija nekāda cilvēktiesību atbalstītāju banda (vismaz viņi uzstājās Dienvidāfrikā aparteīda laikā un nebūt nesatraucās par to, ka tur melnie tika "mazliet" diskriminēti, ka tik piķis nāk). Vispār šis albūms varētu būt vispolitiskākais ieraksts, ko es esmu jebkad dzirdējis, vienlaikus saglabājot pietiekami interesantu muzikālo saturu. Tādas kompozīcijas kā "Commercial Break", "Unilever", "Coca-Colanisation" un "And in a Nutshell" varētu izrotāt arī nepolitisku albūmu. Muzikāli ieraksts ir ļoti daudzveidīgs - "Invasion" ir normāls hard-core pankroks, "How to get your band on television" vispār nepakļaujas definīcijai, "British Colonialism & the BBC" ir mazliet etnisks pops, "Coca-Colanisation" - tipisks Čumbavambisms un tā tālāk. Ja man vēl tam ieraksta kvalitāte būtu labāka, vispār būtu superīgs albūms.

Šī bija filma, kas man atklāja Kusturicu. Iepriekš par šādu režisoru nebiju pat dzirdējis, bet pēcāk kļuvu par vidēji lielu viņa talanta cienītāju. Šajā darbā Emirs K. prezentē savu iecienītāko tematiku - rāda Dienvidslāvijas čigānus viņu priekos un bēdās, to visu ietērpjot trakā balagāna komēdijā. Šī nav intelektuālā Eiropas komēdija, kādu varētu gaidīt no... nezinu kā. Šī ir traka un jautra filma par čigāniem, kas vēlas precēties, par čigāniem, kas nevēlas precēties, par čigāniem, kas ir parādā naudu citiem čigāniem, par čigāniem, kas gandrīz nomirst un par čigāniem, kas tiek iemesti sūdu bedrē, par čigāniem ar nesmukiem zobiem, par čigāniem, kas mīlējas pļavā, par čigāniem, kas pērk preces no krievu jūrniekiem, par čigāniem, kas zaudē visu naudu azartspēlēs, un, protams, šī ir filma, kurā tu vari dzirdēt tehno remiksā ģeniālo "Pit Bull". Pārsmiešanās ir garantēta, un tas arī ir Kusturicas mērķis.

I have this project, you see - there`s a list of German-writing authors who`s work I want to become familiar with. And among those 78 persons there`s this Mr. Schnurre here. This work is called "a novel of stories" or something similar to that. And this is exactly what it is - we get short (mostly) stories from a boy`s childhood that aren`t really connected one to another apart from the fact that it`s the same boy`s life we read about in all those stories. It`s the 20`s-30`s Germany where he grows up - in the poverty with the nazis rising. But these stories are mostly positive, although not too happy. His dad has no work most of the time, so he spends it with his son, trying to make a jolly good childhood for the boy, and he succeeds at that. Among the stories the standouts are "The Gift" about the boy`s first love (at the age of something like 5) who dies from a disease but since she had assured him that death is not bad he doesn`t get sad about that and people surrounding him think he has no heart. It`s not the only great story, of course, the book is very humane, and it`s easy to read, although it describes no beautiful fantasy world. And what it reminds me of is "Bille" - a novel of stories by Vizma Belsevica - a Latvian writer - that was in the same stylistics only in a much more minor key. Not that I think that there`s any connection between these two books.

This film spun a massive controversy because its very sexual content. That was probably the thing Bernardo Bertolucci was aiming for, `cos otherwise his new work might have been unnoticed. Mathew is an American student that goes to study to Paris in 1968 and happens to be there at the time of student riots. Yet he doesn`t participate in them for he rather plays sex games with Isabelle and her twin-brother Theo. All of them are fans of good films and music, and they live in a world of peace and boheme. Before watching this film I was informed that there would be quite a lot of sex in it, and it was. Sadly apart from being beautifully done this film hasn`t got very much else to offer. As a matter of fact I`d think that it is a perfect film for a person that thinks of itself as a film expert but actually isn`t one (me for example). There are references to films by Godard, scenes from some old films are shown and once you recognise one of them you think of yourself very highly. If you don`t recognise the scene you think that it only proves the greatness of this film. As for me, I`m not a fan of French new-wave, but "The Dreamers" seemed to me being just a kinkier version of "Zabriskie point". And "Zabriskie point" isn`t my favourite film either.

Вот уж не думал, что о Голливудских фильмах буду писать по-русски. Однако иного выхода нет, так как даннуй фильм я действительно смотрел на русской ДВД-шке. Сюжет у фильма такой замороченный, что даже описать сложно. Слевин только что потерял работу, увидел, как его подруга занимается любовью по-собачи с другим парнем, да и к тому же бандюга разбил ему нос. Теперь он окалачивается в квартире у своего приятеля Ника, которого по какой-то причине нет дома. Вдруг оказывается, что все его принимают за Ника и ему нужно как Нику убить гомосексуального сына одного раввина - гангстера с одной стороны и вернуть 33 тыщи баксов этому самому раввину с другой стороны. Еще в игре участвует странный тип (Bruce Willis) - профессиональный киллер Добрый Кот. Сначала все происходящее на экране кажется какой-то чушью, ни черта не понятно, а потом оказывается, что, как это часто бывает в подобных фильмах, история то не очень на самом деле запутанная, зато нелогическая, а хитрый план мог и вообще провалиться, если бы кто-то из замешанных лиц действовал иначе. Вот это мне не нравится в фильмах про "cons" - что тебе в конце фильма подкидывают ключ к всему сюжету, который переворачивает весь рассказ в противоположную сторону, да только те, кто спланировал историю, получается, уже изначально знали, как все остальные участники игры будут себя вести - а это не особо достоверно. В фильме достаточно много звезд первой величины - Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley и второй величины - Lucy Liu, Josh Hartnett, Stanley Tucci, но чего-то "Счастливому числу Слевина" явно недостает.

After having seen Werner Herzog`s film about Kaspar Hauser I knew I`d try to watch something else by this director. And Aguirre is considered to be his best film. Actually I didn`t get the reasons for that. Probably it is interesting for some people to watch an endless journey on a river where people are looking for the legendary Eldorado. Sadly there ain`t particulary anything going on. So, there is Aguirre, a military man who overthrows the leader of the expedition, names a stupid fatso the kig of Eldorado and lets most of his people die in hideous deaths. But even those deaths aren`t very entertaining. And nothing else in this film is. Boring! The ending was good though. I also must admit that the camera work is good, and maybe even the actors aren`t half-bad, but the pace of the film is just too slow for me.

I`ve seen quite a lot of cartoons lately and that has left an impression upon me that all they do is recycle from other cartoons. Tak "Over the hedge" for instance. First, there`s a hyper active squirrel that`s not allowed to use coffeine (a nod to "Hoodwinked"), then there`s a duo of possums that play dead on many occasions ("Ice age 2" anyone?). Then there`s the story of a racoon infiltrating in a group of animals whom it wants to use as helpers for gathering some food for a hungry bear but then the racoon learns to know what love and family is (that was used in the original "Ice Age" when Diego the tiger first approached Syd the sloth and Manny the mammoth planning to drive them to other tigers). Of course, according to a cartoon tradition you absolutely must paint a skunk into a cat (or vise versa), so a skunk-cat couple could be created (no one actually cares that they are different species) - this reminds me of a cliche from some "Warner Brothers" cartoons with the french speaking skunk and also of "Shrek" where the donkey had a dragon for spouse. The leading racoon is spoken by Bruce Willis, one of the racoons is Avril Lavigne, still the characters aren`t especially original, bright or memorable in any other way. Animation is pretty good though, still it doesn`t have a strong story to build upon and that hurts a little.
