Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King

Gredzenu pavēlnieka triloģijas ekranizācijas pēdējā daļa guva tik daudz dažādu atzinību, ka man pat nevajadzētu par šo filmu rakstīt, tomēr es rakstīšu gan.

Saul Bellow - Humboldt`s Gift

I have something with those Nobel prize winners - I don`t like them much. Out of more than 100 recipients of this prestiguous award I`m not all familiar with the work of more than 50 writers, while only selected few of those whom I know I like. Those would include Knut Hamsun (more or less), Hermann Hesse (more or less), William Folkner (more or less), Albert Camus (more or less), Samuel Beckett (much) and Gabriel García Márquez. Saul Bellow won`t be joinging this list, as far as I can tell at the moment. First, I found "Humboldt`s Gift" to be rather boring. Second, the story line was pretty thin. Third, most of the characters weren`t really evolved (especially that goes for Humboldt, who might have been depicted much more insightful). Fourth, I found Bellow`s writing about sex quite repelling. About the story: Charlie Citrine (the first person teller) is a successful writer, although he hasn`t been particulary successful lately. His ex-wife is sueing him all the time and taking more and more money away, so he`s not far from being broke at the moment. His car is destructed by a mobster whom he owes some money after an unfair card game. He has a young girlfriend who wants to get married to him. And he once was a friend to the late Humboldt Fleischer, a poet who was very popular once but got crazy on booze later. Humboldt`s gift is an idea for a film that the dead poet has left to Charlie and to Humboldt`s own widow. The story mostly evolves around Charlies life and his memories of Humboldt (who by the way thought of Charlie being a treacher who had sold out their friendship but that was because of Humboldt himself being one card short of a full deck, if you know what I mean). Then there`s a lot of things going on with that gangster figure, who after receiving his money from Charlie suddenly turns into a friend and plans various schemes for Charlie to regain his financial status. The whole thing seems very, very pointless to me. It`s realism without a clear story, it`s not particulary poetic, it has quite a lot of useless mentioning of Jewty, like I cared for this subject at all. And what I also don`t like in this book is depiction how cool the leading character (based upon the author of course) is about women and how active his sex life still is (at the age of 60, yuck!). In the end it`s just a book of 470 pages where little goes on and which is hard for one to read till the end.

The Faces - A Nod is as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse

Now this is one short title for an album! At least the name of the band ain`t that short. This is the band that came out of "the Small Faces", still having both Ronnie Wood and Rod "the mole" Stewart on the lineup. This record apart from the fact that its title is offensively long shall be remembered by the fact that upon it is the most popular song the Faces ever had - "Stay with me" - an arena rock song with screaming Rod ordering a woman to spend the night tonight with him and leave him in the morning. The music on those songs usually isn`t particulary innovative, and it could have been performed by anyone from "Cactus" to... 50 other bands. The opening "Judy`s Farm" is quite cool though. This certainly ain`t no milestone in modern rock music, but it`s a rockin` album with a young Rod Stewart who already has his trademark voice, and at least it came way before disco shlock was invented.

Fleetwood Mac - Mystery To Me

"Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies" - šausmas! "Mystery to me" ir grupas otrās reinkarnācijas viens no labākajiem albūmiem (vismaz pēc kritiķu domām). Tikām "Mystery to me" var uzskatīt par pārejas perioda ierakstu. Varbūt vienīgi "Hypnotized" izceļas uz pārējo viņa dziesmu fona, tikām McVie "The Way I feel" izklausās pēc ļoti labas Joni Mitchell dziesmas. Vēl viens savdabīgs objekts albūmā ir dziesma "For Your Love", kas vislabāk zināma "The Yardbirds" izpildījumā.

Bob Dylan - Blood on the tracks

Lai gan biju domājis Dilanu vairāk neklausīties, tomēr "Blood on the tracks" skaitās viens no viņa spožākajiem albūmiem, tā ka tam tomēr izdevu iespēju sevi pārliecināt par savu skaistumu. Varbūt taisni tas man ne visai patīk, jo Dilana balss tomēr nav paredzēta jebkāda veida mūzikai. "You`re an idiot, babe. It`s a wonder that you still know how to breathe." Tiesa, tā ir fona mūzika ar veselu kaudzi skaistu kompozīciju, piemēram, ievadošais "Tangled up in Blue", "Shelter from the storm" vai tas pats "Idiot Wind"

Foo Fighters - In Your Honor

Oh, yeah! Dave Grohl decides once again that he`s a singer and not a drummer and produces a new album of his band `Food Fighters, Car Lighters`. This time he`s decided to dump the formula and try something adventurous. Which means that instead of playing a whole CD of angry rock songs, he plays a whole CD of angry rock songs and adds to it another CD of acoustic music. The first CD of rock`n`roll ain`t a bad one but it`s not particulary memorable or interesting. It basically just is. What goes for the second disc, it ain`t that good either. Ok, it`s different. So what? It`s boring. A great songwriter Grohl never was, and most of his songs are about as distinguishable one from another as those of Leonard Cohen. Yet Cohen at least was/is a great master of lyrics, which Grohl isn`t. Probably the record ain`t bad either but I just can`t find anything about it what I should like.

Charles Cecil - Broken Sword: The Angel of Death

Prosper Merimee - La Jacquerie

Can you imagine the days of the feodals when you kissed your masters hand and let him have sexual intercourse with your wife, daughter and even your dog? I guess, you can`t. Neither can I. But P.Merimee could. And that`s why he wrote this play. There`s like this village somewhere in France where those aristocrates do what they want, then there`s monks who also do what they please to do, and last there`s the working class slob. And this guy named Jean, who happens to be a monk himself, leads the mob to rebellion against their masters. It all turns out to be a blooshed, and even the purest of hearts turn sour at that (like Jean himself). He got his left and right hands - there`s Pierre who`s in love with the local aristocrats daughter (who by the way considers him as a man of low origin worse than a dog), and a rebel living in the woods calling himself Werewolf - a nice fellow, imho. This seems to be historically very acurate, and even interesting to read. A bit too old-stylish for me, but nevertheless a good play. Although I have absolutely no idea how this could be shown on a stage. A film version would certainly make more sense.

Man - Be Nice To Yourself At Least Once A Day

Jee, once again a record with a title almost as long as the LP itself. "Man" was an obscure British band that became famous for its song "Erotic", featuring the sound of an orgasm. So I guess it would be a wild guess if I said that the title of this album means "Masturbate at least once a day". So what? And what`s in its content? Since my mp3 files don`t provide lyric sheets I`m not so sure what the concept of this album is. There ain`t that much of singing, on "Bananas" the text goes something like "I like marihuana/cos it gets me stoned". Probably it was true for the band. Musically it gets no complaints from me despite the fact that the record basically is just jamming without a real purpose, but it`s quite good anyhow. Probably you wouldn`t want the entire world of music be like "Man" but for its own purposes the record works quite well.

Mauvais esprit
