Jāatzīst, ka Bernards Verbērs ir gandrīz vai apsēsts skudru fanātiķis. Vismaz kā savādāk lai izskaidro, ka šis autors ne tikai ir uzrakstījis romānu triloģiju par šiem kukaiņiem, bet arī citos savos darbos tiem atvēlējis ļoti lielu lomu?

Lai apliecinātu, ka esmu labs, šai grāmatai pat izveidoju puslīdz normālu ārtiklu Vikipēdijā (lai gan, protams, tur vēl varētu šo to pilnveidot). Kā jau var nojaust, šis ir nākamais romāns Verbēra ciklā par skudrām. Tā darbība norisinās gadu pēc pirmā romāna darbības.

Actually I read this book as the last of the "Thanatonauts" trilogy, but it somehow has happened that I write about it first in my factoid, which seems to be very logical. Michen Penson is a young man who works as a doctor and who has experienced coma when he was a child. His friend Raul Razobraque is a young man who works as a biologist and who`s father was writing a book about death until he commited suicide. Together Michel and Raul try to find out what`s death really all about (so in some ways this is similar to "The meaning of life"). What they find out is that after death (or in case of falling into a special kind of coma) soul of a person leaves the body and starts a journey to heaven. So they want to learn more about this journey. When the French president nearly dies and experiences such a state he hires Raul to become the explorer of the unknown continent of the dead that happens to be if not 100% material than at least reachable before returing back. In order to pass the seven heavens Michel and Raul (but mostly people working for them, for they themselves don`t go into death before the last pages of the book) have to join forces with all religions for monks can also go to heaven and come back, fight a war in the land of the dead and rescue Michel`s dying wife. This all is "enriched" by adding some facts about what different religions have been saying about death. In short, the book was quite exciting to read, yet it wasn`t a great book. I believe that Werber achieved his best with the second book of the series - "The Empire of the Angels" while here he aims too much for action scenes. His characters are okay, yet they don`t get too much development and even the central character isn`t really consistent. The storytelling also has a few lapses - having too much repetition of moments like "thautonautics was on the rise" and "thautonautics wasn`t too popular then" (such sentences appear periodically and way too often). I also don`t like Werber messing too much around with all religions. Still the book ain`t bad it could be better.

Beidzot esmu pieveicis vienu no Verbēra grāmatu cikliem un varu pateikt īsi - tas ir mēsls! Jā, es, kas sākotnēji pret šo rakstnieku izturējos pozitīvi, varu pateikt, ka viņš ir ļoti vājš rakstnieks. Viņa romānos mēdz ieviesties labas idejas, bet pasniegt viņš tās nemāk. Šī pati "Skudru revolūcija" brīžiem gandrīz kļūst par normālu romānu, bet...

Empire of the Angels is the second part of the trilogy about life and death by Bernard Werber. Since I haven`t read the first part yet, I don`t know whether this one is better or worse than the first, and I also wasn`t already familiar with the characters at the beginning of this book. The main hero, a certain Michelle Planard (if I remember his name correctly) dies at the very beginning of the book. He goes to heaven where his soul is weighted and with the help of his guardian angel (who happens to be Emile Zola) he`s updated to an angel and three people whom he should guard are given him. His main goal is to make one of the persons reach the level of 600 points (which one should achieve in order to become an angel). Michelle can help his people on their hard way through life on earth using several tools which include: 1) intuition; 2) signs; 3) dreams; 4) mediums; 5) cats. Yet people rarely want to be guided through life by an angel. The three patients of Michelle are: 1) Jacques, a French man who becomes a writer; 2) an American top model; 3) a Russian criminal named Igor. At the beginning of their journey Igor has the best starting position (in terms of points earned in previous life), yet it doesn`t go well enough for him - he`s born to a mother that wants to kill him, first he ends up in a children`s care centrum, then in a prison for minors, then in Chechnya. Meanwhile the young model evolves into a very egoistic and dull person. Michelle doesn`t follow his "patients" lives too much for he has other things to do. What I learned from this book is the recipe for a human person: 25% karma + 25% from parents + 50% free choice. This was one of the few books that I`d lately read that had a very strong influence upon me. Maybe it`s that way because I liked what the author was writing, I liked the message, I liked the idea. I have to admit that not everything in this book was marvelous and that some episodes weren`t as bright as others, yet it`s still one of the best books I`ve read this year.

This was my second meeting with Mr. Werber`s writing and I must admit that after "The Empire of the Angels" I was expecting a litte more from this book. The main question of the book seems to be - who killed a famous doctor of medicine after he just has won a battle of chess agains the best computer in the world? A certain Miss Anderson who he had an affair with claims herself as the one responsible - after all he died at the moment of having an orgasm. Yet a couple of journalists don`t believe that everything is that simple. Only with time they discover that this fellow (I`m terrible at remembering names) had come into posession of the "ultimate secret". The nature of the secret isn`t such that various groups of very serious persons (VSPs) would want to take hold of it (actually they would, but it`s not the question here), it`s the secret itself that can make one die. The book contains a list of motives that drive peoples actions: 1. stopping the pain; 2. getting rid of fears; 3. primary needs of survival; 4. secondary needs of comfort; 5. duty; 6. anger; 7. sex; 8. drugs; 9. personal interest; 10. religion; 11. adventure; 12. promise of the ultimate secret; 13. the ultimate secret itself. What is the ultimate secret? It`s pleasure beyond imagination, it`s something that can make you climb the highest wall, forget about your fears, forget about all the first 11 motives on the list, and it`s something you`re ready to die for. Yet it`s so strong that you get addicted from it and there`s no cure for you in this world. That`s why it is the ultimate secret. And it is hidden in your brain.

Nesaprotu, kā tas atgadījās, ka manā faktoīdā trūkst ieraksta šim Verbēra romānam, tagad šo situāciju ņemos labot.

Bernards Verbērs ir viens fenomenāls "frukts" - viņam ar pirmo romānu, kas nokļuva manās rokās, izdevās mani savaldzināt un ar visiem vēlākajiem darbiem viņš mani tikai arvien vairāk atvaldzina. Uz šodienu esmu izlasījis kopumā septiņas viņa grāmatas, un katra nākošā mani pārsteidz arvien mazāk, tomēr vismaz kārtības labad droši vien piebeigšu gan "Skudru" triloģiju, gan pēcnāves dzīves pentaloģiju.

Tas jau vairs nav smieklīgi - man ne pārāk patīk Verbēra grāmatas, bet es esmu izlasījis gandrīz visus viņa veikumus. Turklāt pēc pēdējās "Dievu" grāmatas stingri biju apņēmies pielikt punktu laika veltīšanai šim autoram. Un "Zvaigžņu tauriņu" es patiešām nebiju plānojis lasīt, taču sanāca tā, ka man steidzami vajadzēja paņemt no vecāku grāmatu plaukta kaut ko lasāmu un nelasītu, un izvēle krita tieši uz šo grāmatu. Un tādā veidā es izlasīju nu jau desmito viņa romānu. Vājprāts, vai ne?

Beidzot tas ir noticis - esmu pievarējis Bernāra Verbēra pentaloģiju par pēcnāves dzīvi. Nekas, ka pēdējos pāris romānus lasīju ar pamatīgu piespiešanos. Domājams, ja mana pazīšanās ar šo autoru nebūtu sākusies ar "Eņģeļu impēriju" (par kuras izcilību gan es arī pēdējā laikā arvien vairāk šaubos, bet piesardzības labad to nepārlasīšu, lai nesanāk vilties), es nemūžam nebūtu veltījis savu laiku visiem pieciem šī cikla romāniem (plus vēl paķerot klāt "Pēdējo noslēpumu" un "Skudru" triloģiju). Patlaban, ja apskatās manus vērtējumus pirmajiem četriem romāniem, tas izskatās šādi: 7 - 9 - 7 - 5. Patiesībā nemaz ne tik slikti, taču, iespējams, objektīvāk būtu katram no šiem četriem romāniem pa vienam punktam noskaitīt nost, un tad jau sanāks pavisam skumja bilde.

Atceļā no Budapeštas biju stingri izlēmis izlasīt kaut ko franču valodā. Grūti gan gāja ar lasāmā materiāla izvēli: divas grāmatas, ko biju Kindlā iekopējis vēl Rīgā, izrādījās jau lasītas, tad vēl virkne dažādu sarežģījumu un beidzot izvēle gūlās uz it kā pārbaudītu, bet vienlaikus - stipri apšaubāmu - vērtību, proti Bernarda Verbēra grāmatu ar nosaukumu "Ceļojuma grāmata". Situācija ar Verbēru ir sekojoša: viņš ir tāds visai šaubīgs literāts, kuru es nekādi nenosauktu par izcilu rakstnieku (tiesa, viņa trūcīgā literārā valoda ir viens no apstākļiem, kāpēc viņu ir viegli lasīt franciski), kurš turklāt pārmērīgi aizraujas ar pseido filozofiju un pareizākas pasaules radīšanas mēģinājumiem. Tāpat viņam var pārmest to, ka vienu un to pašu konceptu viņš atkārto daudzās grāmatās (runa nav gluži par identiskiem sižetiem, bet drīzāk par idejām, kuras tev, lasot kārtējo viņa grāmatu, šķitīs totāli zināmas).

Savulaik es itin cītīgi lasīju Bernāra Verbēra darbus, ar visu to, ka patiesībā jau lielākā daļa no tiem mani it nemaz nespēja pārliecināt par viņa kā autora vērtību. Taču viens ir nenoliedzams - viņš lasās viegli, līdz ar to man šķita itin dabiski pamēģināt, kā tas būs - lasīt Verbēru oriģinālā. Tā kā šis autors aizraujas ar gana sarežģītiem konceptiem, kurus ietver lubeņu stila sižetos, vajadzētu sanākt gana labam variantam lasīšanai man tomēr itin svešā valodā. Itin prognozējami, ka laikā kopš 2009. gada, kad atmetu Verbēram ar roku, viņam klajā ir nākusi vēl čupiņa romānu, taču pieķēros es vienam no viņa relatīvi agrīnajiem darbiem - "Mūsu tēvu tēvam".

Ar Verbēra daiļradi man ir ļoti sarežģītas attiecības, kurās nav sevišķi daudz mīlestības. Ir maz autoru, no kuru daiļrades es būtu tik daudz lasījis. Vienlaikus labi ja dažas no viņa grāmatām esmu atzinis par salīdzinoši labām esam. Un tas man neliedz periodiski atkal kaut ko no viņa grāmatām izlasīt. Vai tas liecina par slēptu mazohismu?
