L'ombre

n/a
Nojaušu, ka pat vāciski man to lasīt būtu grūti, kur nu vēl franču mēlē.

Hiroshima mon amour

Tā bija pilnīga sagadīšanās, ka Alēna Renē filmu "Hirošima, mana mīla" skatījāmies atombumbas gadadienā, taču tas noteikti kaut vai novēloti, bet papildu nozīmi šai filmai tas noteikti piešķīra. Skaitās, ka šī filma ir pirmais lielais vēstnesis, kas pasludināja Jaunā viļņa ienākšanu franču kino, un šaubu nav, ka filma savam laikmetam bija drosmīga, moderna un neordināra. Jautājums - cik drosmīga, moderna un neordināra tā šķiet skatītājam 2017. gadā?

North by Northwest

8
Skatoties piecdesmito-sešdesmito gadu filmas, mani vienmēr fascinē, cik bieži galvenais varonis izskatās pēc Džordža Klūnija. Vai pareizāk - cik ļoti Džordžs Klūnijs atbilst tās ēras standarta galvenās lomas atveidotājam - izskatīgam mazliet iesirmam vīrietim, gludi skūtam, ar izteiksmīgu zodu un solīdās drēbēs. Un Kerijs Grānts, kas atveido galveno varoni klasiskajā Hičkoka filmā "North by Northwest" ir viens no visidentificējamākajiem proto-Klūnijiem, kādu vien varu iedomāties.

Henderson the Rain King

7.0

Orfeu Negro

6.0
Marsela Kamī "Melnais Orfejs" vispārēji ir atzits par vienu no 20.gadsimta franču kino lielajiem šedevriem. Filma saņēma gan Zelta palmas zaru Kannu festivālā, gan Oskaru kā gada labākā filma svešvalodā. Plus vēl tajā skan Antonio Karlosa Žobima mūzika (kārtējo reizi apstiprinot jau sen novēroto tendenci, ka klasiskajās franču filmās mūziku taisīja tādi ļaudis, kādus Holivudas darbos meklēt būtu velti).

Les liasions dangereuses

6.0
Šīs "Bīstamo sakaru" ekranizācijas režisors Rožē Vadims (īstajā vārdā Rožē Vladimirs Pļemjaņņikovs) varētu pretendēt uz viena no 20.gadsimta slavenākajiem baltkrieviem statusu. Protams, jāpiezīmē, ka Vadima māte bija francūziete un Baltkrievijā viņš visticamākais nekad nebija bijis, bet, manuprāt, tas nav iemesls slēpt šī režisora baltkrievu saknes. Jāatzīst gan, ka vēl vairāk kā ar savām filmām Vadims bija pazīstams ar savām sievām - diezgan īsā laika periodā viņš paspēj vīra statusā apbūt Bridžitai Bardo, Katrīnai Denēvai un Džeinai Fondai (pa vidu vēl bija Anete Stoiberga, kura arīdzan tolaik bija skaistule, bet ne tāda kalibra zaigzne kā pārējās trīs Vadima sievas.

Pociag

7.0
"Pociag" jeb "Nakts vilciens" ir viena no poļu filmām, ko man rekomendēja Kžištofs Uminskis.

The Pursuer

6.5
Īsti skaidrs, kāpēc šis Hulio Kortazāra stāsts tika atsevišķas grāmatas veidā izdots vācu "Dienas grāmatas" ekvivalenta ietvaros, man nav. Nē, es neapšaubu, ka Kortazārs bija ievērojams rakstnieks, taču par to, ka viņa ievērojamākais darbs ir tieši šis stāsts, es nepavisam neesmu pārliecināts.

Zazie in the Metro

5.5

The Sirens of Titan

8.5

Plan 9 from Outer Space

5.5
Films rarely get sillier than this one - the story that the film tries to tell is at least as senseless as that of "Scary Movie 4", yet this film supposedly is a serious horror movie and not a parody. It`s directed by Edward Wood who`s mostly famous as the hero in Tim Burton`s "Ed Wood". Mr. Wood is considered by many people the worse filmmaker of all times. And he truly tris to convince everybody that he deserves his status. The story goes something like this - aliens want to inform the Earth that if people don`t change they will annihilate the universe (a bit similar to "The day the earth stood still"). But since nobody listens to them, they decide that the best strategy to convince people of their seriousity is raising the dead and thus prooving their power. So they make three zombies that start killing people. In the end the aliens have to flee, of course. Actually I can`t really imagine that this film was meant to be serious. It`s such an incoherent mess with zillions of goofs, mistakes, cheap props etc. that it seems impossible that Mr. Wood didn`t do this film as some sort of a parody. Yet everyone claims that he wasn`t. This film truly is a must-see for it`s badness. Actually, the rating doesn`t mean that it`s good - for it`s worse than you can imagine, but it reflects the fact that I quite liked it, nevermind how godawful it was.

The Mansion

8.5
William F. was one of the most acclaimed novelists of the previous century yet until this time I hadn`t read a single one of his works. I`m not so sure how it happened this way but it`s a solid fact that I never really had time for Faulkner. Maybe because I thought he was one of those boring WW1 writers (not that I had anything against WW1 writers). But the Mansion doesn`t have too much to do with either WW1 or WW2. Yes, both of those wars happen in the period the heroes of this book live, yet they aren`t mentioned too often (heck, they are nearly not mentioned at all). The books starts off as a story about Mink Snoups, a young and not too bright farmer that gets angry with his rich neighbour mainly because of his own weird perception of the world. It ends for him quite badly after he kills the rich neibhbour Mink is sentenced for life at the Parchman farm (a prison where you work in the field). Later on we switch more to other Snoups`es as people connected with them. Mainly due to the adopten daughter of Flem Snoups - Mink`s cousin who has achieved much in his life and who doesn`t want Mink ever to come out of Parchmen`s place. The novel has lots of different leading characters, forming something like a weird flow of different story lines, that somehow get perfectly connected in the end. At some scenes the whole thing may seem overlong, yet Faulkner knows exactly what he`s doing and what each character is for in his world. Not than most of them have a purpose or something, it only means that nothing is out of place.

Frank the Fifth

7.5
Back to Mr. D. once again! I don`t really know why I keep reading his books, probably because he has a lot of them in the library I visit occasionally. So, this one is a clear piece of satyre. Frank the Fifth is the owner of a private bank, but the times are hard, you know, and a private bank can`t survive unless you do some dirty work. Franks with lower numbers - his predecessors also did some nasty stuff but at least they were rich - one of them owned China, for example. But Frank the Fifth is a good fellow, he likes literature, but everyone who works for him is a crook and those crooks steal from the bank the whole time. On the other hand they also steal, lie and even murder FOR the bank. Then the things are going extremely bad, Frank immitates his own death, but it goes against the plan of his children who plan to take over the bank which their father wants to close. And the whole shebang goes on once again. The rest of the people is worse than Frank - he can`t even kill a person, unlike his wife, for example. Of course, this stuff is massive satyre, and it`s funny, if you ask my opinion. This Duerenmatt fellow knew how to write a good piece of satyre, that`s for sure.

Billiard at Half Past Nine

4.0
For some reason unknown to me I consider Mr. Boell to be an important modern German writer. I may be wrong, but something tells me I`m not. This novel though is not a modern German classic, at least it`s what I think it to be. So, there`s this important family of the 20th century Germany, and there`s nothing particular to tell. There are three generations of those people, but not much going on with them. The granddad was once a dynamite expert at the war, but I don`t really know anything about it. To be quite honest, I didn`t read the book too honest, for it bored me to death, and beyond. There`s a bad guy also participating, and he doesn`t do anything as well. Ok, he was a villain at WW2, as far as I understood, but to be frank - I don`t give a damn about the heroes of this book, what they did and why. A wasted time. Full stop.

The 400 Blows

7.5
You know what? I decided to give Francois Truffaut another chance! I had seen one of his worst films - "Fahrenheit 451" - and now I wanted to see his arguably best work. And you know what? It was worth it. Antoine Doinel is a fourteenyearold who`s not happy at school, `cos the teacher of French hates him; he`s not happy at home, for his mother doesn`t love him, and his father isn`t even his real father; and his mother wanted an abortion in the first place. He starts stealing things, leaves home several times, his parents don`t know what they should do about their child, because they don`t know what to do about themselves. At some times the film is funny, at others it is sad as a weeping willow, but it still is an enjoyment to watch. There`s one scene I especially like - it`s a lesson in sports where the children run through the streets of Paris after their teacher and on every corner a few of them leave, and in the end the teacher is left all alone by himself.

The Tin Drum

6.0
A hard work has been completed - I managed to find my way through the seven hundred pages of this document of its time. Rewarding? Maybe. At least it was good for my German, not that I didn`t like it at all but as a whole this book is a bit too German for me. I can`t tell what it is in German literature I often dislike but it is present here. Possibly it takes itself too seriously and is a bit too edgy, I don`t know the right words for it. The entertainment level is not high enough for me, despite that fact that subjects brought up in this book are worthy. It seems that Mr. Grass is just not my author. Well, so be it.A note: A mistake found in the novel "Die Blechtrommel" by Gunther Grass. Quote: "Er stellt das Grammophon an: "The Platter" singen "The Great Pretender". Is there a problem? Yes, despite the fact, that "The Platters" indeed did perform the particular song, since the action is taking place during the Second World war (in the year 1944), "The Platters" weren`t formed yet (they started only in 1953).
